As part of a committed team of experienced professionals within the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Assistant Director, SecurityAssessmentand Design prioritizes, documents, and maintains securityassessments of facilities across NYU – both in NYC and at the university's Global Centers. This role identifies and analyzes assets, vulnerabilities, and threats for the purpose of quantifying security risks and presenting mitigation options in the form of security technology designs and operational plans. Assessments blend operational, security technology, and CPTED considerations together with externally-sourced crime and safety statistics to produce comprehensive recommendations (people, process, and technology).
The Assistant Director serves as the liaison between Public Safety and University Space Planning for the purposes of prioritizing assessments, maintaining data from previously-conducted assessments, and advising DPS functional units re: operational impacts of space usage changes. This role collaborates with DPS External Affairs, University Relations & Public Affairs, and external agencies as appropriate to advance CPTED-related and other mitigation measures that may require special approvals from external authorities. The Assistant Director manages information associated with securityassessments, including both externally-sourced crime statistics relevant to DPS's operational Sectors.
The role coordinates regularly with the security Field Operations and Communications divisions to maintain central awareness of incident patterns that might inform operational, technological, and/or CPTED recommendations. Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice Technology, Construction, or related field.
Required Experience: 5-10 years of progressively responsible, relevant work experience.
Preferred Experience: Experience in a leadership role in security for Higher Education and/or crime prevention at state/local/federal agency, global experience. Experience working with and maintaining GIS data and crime statistics.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: The successful candidate will demonstrate: current familiarity with security and emergency industry trends in both operations and technology, a successful track record of executive communication, and well-developed analytical abilities. Collaborates well, working in a team environment. Proficient written and oral communication. Can interpret crime statistics, maps, and schematic diagrams. Working understanding of security technology. Ability to understand and apply security and risk assessment methodologies in multiple operating contexts. Working knowledge of CPTED principles, security operations practices.
