This individual will lead HCA Healthcare’s enterprise-wide physical security program, protecting the people, assets, and operations of Company hospitals, non-acute care locations, and corporate facilities in the United State and UK. This includes setting the vision and strategy, leading the people, overseeing the processes, implementing the technologies, communicating key messages to leadership and the workforce, and responding to incidents and risks as necessary for an industry-leading physical security program.
The Chief Physical Security Officer role affects every patient, employee, physician, contractor, business associate, or other individual who enters an HCA facility, uses any HCA IT system, or touches any HCA data. It is an essential component of critical company regulatory compliance, clinical care, and daily operations.
People: This position directly manages the corporate physical security team (approximately 20 staff), including the 24x7 Physical Security Operations Center (PSOC). The Chief Physical Security Officer is also the Company “business owner” for security guard services at our facilities, and manages the contracts and relationships with these vendors, and the procedures and oversight for their 3000 contract security officers working in our facilities. This includes determining qualification and training needs, development of guard procedures, allocation of staffing, monitoring of performance, and investigation of incidents involving security staff. The Chief Physical Security Officer also sets Company strategy for engagement of local law enforcement at our facilities, providing guidelines and monitoring operations. This leader also drives communications and training that aims to make every member of the workforce a security-aware asset to the program.
Process: The Chief Physical Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the enterprise physical security program’s strategy, policies and standards, priorities for projects and spending, business cases for funding, budget management, training and communications, operational monitoring, threat intelligence collection, vulnerability assessment, risk management, and incident response activities align with regulatory and company requirements. Examples of key programs include De-Escalation Training, Active Shooter Preparedness, Staff Badging, monitoring of CCTV video, Executive Protection, Visitor Management, and Use of Force.
Technology: The Chief Physical Security Officer is also responsible for the strategy, planning, building of business cases for funding, and collaborating with the IT organization on implementation and monitoring of physical security technologies. Systems used include CCTV cameras and recording, building and interior door access controls, badging, duress alarms, facility lockdown, and special measures for behavioral health areas, infant security, and medication dispensing. This requires close collaboration with Information Technology, Design & Construction, Clinical Services, and Operations leadership.
Communication: The Chief Physical Security Officer must be the visible face of physical security to company leaders, employees, patients, the healthcare industry, law enforcement, and the communities in which we serve. This requires executive presence and strong communication skills for interactions with senior Company leaders, business leaders across the Company, workforce members, industry groups, and community leaders. It also requires planning and oversight of an extensive program of training and awareness communications aimed at cultivating a security-aware workforce and “See something, say something” culture.
Information Protection & Security Leadership: The Chief Physical Security Officer also has a broader role in supporting the success of HCA’s Information Protection & Security (IPS) program, including: • Being a leader/spokesperson for the company-wide IPS program • Input in the development of policies, standards, guidelines, awareness communications, and training to implement the strategy of all IPS programs. • Meeting with senior company leadership to communicate IPS program plans, results, and proposals. • Integrated action planning, governance and oversight, communications, community building, and development with peer IPS team leaders for — o Privacy o Identity & Access o Information Security o Information Lifecycle Management o IPS Field Operation o Business Risk Solutions • Collaboration with peer leaders of other IPS teams in the prioritization, oversight, sponsorship, and management of the HCA investment in IPS technology projects --averaging approximately $10M operational and $8M capital per year.

Identifies and mentors high potential staff. • Increases understanding of physical security regulations, concepts, tools, and leading practices in the healthcare industry. Participate in industry forums, and/or educational opportunities to stay current on key areas of responsibility. • Serves as a subject matter expert, and collaborates with business leaders and field personnel to develop and implement targeted security solutions for facilities, markets, divisions, and the enterprise.

10+ years of experience in a leadership role is required.
15+ years of experience in a security related role is required.
This job does require occasional travel.
Bachelor's degree is required with a master's degree preferred.
