Bachelor's degree and 8 years of related experience; or Master's degree and 6 years of related experience; and possession of certification from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy as a Law Enforcement Officer, or Possession of law enforcement certification in another state and successful completion of all application and examination requirements as outlined in Iowa Administrative Code 501-3.8-80B. Experience must include commanding and administration of a shift and/or unit; providing supervision and in-service training, evaluation performance for staff; and directing investigative and /or technical service activities.

The Department of Public Safety at Iowa State University is seeking candidates for a Police Captain. There are two primary areas of responsibility to which a Police Captain may be assigned: Field Services or Investigations & Threat Management. While individual assignments may require special training, a Police Captain must be capable of serving in either assignment area.
The primary responsibility of a Police Captain is to direct the operations and management of field services or investigations and threat management. This position will provide leadership and supervision to managers and staff, as well as supervise and coordinate major case investigations. In the absence of the Chief or Assistant Chief, will assume leadership of the police department. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining written directives and other operating procedures, including operational plans for major events (football games, protests, etc.) Will be responsible for directing Emergency Response Efforts. This position will also review, develop, implement, and recommend training programs. This position will assist in the development and management of the budget and the establishment of long-term goals for the department. The Police Captain will be a liaison with community and university stakeholders.
