ABOUT THE POSITION The Town of Atherton invites you to apply for the position of Police Sergeant. This is an internal and external promotional position opportunity. The position requires an individual to plan, organize, and supervise the work of personnel in field operations. Typical duties may include the following: patrol, inspect officers and equipment; give instructions; maintain discipline; assist officers in follow-up investigations; participate in investigations; oversee police operations and direct officers that are dispatched to crime scenes, traffic collisions, and emergency situations, and assist on these calls when required; participate in all normal patrol activities; assist officers in preparing reports for trial; appear in court, confer with prosecutors, and maintain contact with other law enforcement agencies; give information and direction to the public; review reports submitted by officers; conduct in-service training; write reports of performance for officers under their supervision; prepare reports of shift activity; and manage projects assigned by higher command.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities, which would be typically acquired through: Education & Experience Four years of law enforcement experience as a sworn Police Officer; The employee maintains a current performance evaluation of meets or exceeds standards; • The employee possesses a valid Advanced Certification awarded by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training; • The employee possesses sixty (60 college semester credits or an A.A. or higher degree from an accredited institution of higher learning. Knowledge of: Modern data driven police methods and procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, basic investigation, and identification techniques; criminal law with particular relevance to apprehension and arrest including rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure, and the preservation and presentation of evidence in criminal cases; safe driving principles and practices.

ABOUT THE CITY
The Town of Atherton is approximately five square miles. The
City is located in the San Francisco Peninsula in Southern San
Mateo County. Atherton is a small, rural, and residential
community, with no industrial land-use base. Native trees
cover the five miles of town. Atherton’s population is 7,031,
according to California Department of Finance. There are
approximately 5,052 registered voters and 2,500 households.
The Summer of 2019, Atherton embarked on one of its largest
capital projects in recent history beginning construction on a new Town Center. The project
includes the construction of a new Administration, Community Development Department,
Police Building, a new Library and renovation of the Historic Town Hall. The project is
