We are seeking a Director of Security to join our museum team. The Director of Security is responsible for the overall security and safety of the staff, collections, and visitors of the Norton Museum of Art and its campus. The Director provides leadership to security department staff and proactively consults with all departments on proper security methods, procedures. In addition, the Director is responsible for strong collaboration with the Director of Museum Experience and Director of Retail Operations to provide all visitors to the Museum with an outstanding experience based on the seamless interactions between Security, Visitor Experience and the Store.
Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Leadership of Security department consistent with the Museum’s mission and culture.
- Provide effective staff development, coaching, performance management and accountability designed to achieve optimum results.
- Propose and manage the annual departmental security budget as well as invoice review and approval.
- Develop well-coordinated disaster and emergency response programs for all areas, special exhibitions, and events; ensure appropriate staff training in these areas.
- Consistently develop, administer, and maintain Museum staff training programs, records, and compliance to include visitor experience-centric behavior, procedures relating to emergency evacuation, bomb threats, active shooter, medical emergencies, and other threats.
- Work closely with Director of Museum Experience and Director of Retail Operations to create a welcoming museum environment for all visitors including seamless interactions across Visitor Experience, Store and Security staff.
- Work closely with Human Resources in the selection and hiring of security staff.
- Provide oversight and have a thorough understanding of the museum’s security systems; both access-control and electronic security monitoring.
- Collaborate with Director of IT on cyber security prevention and responding to and investigating any potential issues.
- Manage the maintenance, and any installation and repair, of these security systems and maintain database and archives to ensure compliance with museum policies and industry best practices regarding access to collections storage areas, and other secure spaces and buildings.
- Develop appropriate Security officer post areas specific to the requirements of gallery layouts, exhibits, functions, and special events.
- Perform or assign regular and random off hour visits to ensure strict compliance with security policies and high-quality performance standards during private and museum special functions.
- Manage the performance and documentation of maintenance and certification tests of security, access control, fire protection/detection, and alarm systems.
- Working closely with the Director of Facilities coordinate organization-wide drills, tests and exercises relating to security and life-safety programs and practices.
- Work closely with the Curatorial department to analyze and identify specific security requirements (staffing and technology), and budgets for permanent and changing exhibitions, galleries, and individual objects.
- Work closely with the Director of Facilities to ensure that the museum complies with insurance, accreditation, loan, and other mandated security standards or requirements.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationships with local and state police, fire and emergency management agencies.
- Respond to off-hour emergency situations as required.
- Screen and liaison external security personnel accompanying guests or working at externally sponsored events.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in security management, criminal justice or another applicable field. The equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- 7+ years progressively responsible management experience in security for a campus-based institution or public law enforcement. Museum experience a plus.
- Florida Security License. Florida Private Investigator License a plus.
- Ability to think, communicate clearly and act quickly in emergency/life threatening situations.
- Demonstrated leadership with the ability to work across functional boundaries; build consensus; and drive results.
- Demonstrated strong organizational development skills.
- A high degree of attention to detail.
- Proven experience facilitating training, managing, and mentoring staff.
- Excellent problem-solving and strategic-planning skills.
- Mature judgement and decision-making in a changing, forward-thinking operating and visitor focused environment.
- A high degree of patience, good humor, and fortitude in managing relationships with various parties; including other departments, guests, neighbors and neighborhood associations, and external partners.
- Demonstrated ability to forge mutually respectful and effective relationships with a diverse group of personalities.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must pass stringent background investigation qualifying for Norton’s highest security clearance.
- Weekend, some evening, and on-call work is required.
