The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington (Seattle) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor position in the Global Study of Cybersecurity and Dis/Misinformation. This is a non-tenure track position. The successful hire will have a 3-year renewable contract with an anticipated start date of Autumn 2023.
The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) is a member of the APSIA community, has over 70 faculty with extensive research and teaching experiences that cover significant concerns around the globe, and has vibrant undergraduate and graduate training programs for students interested in both global and international affairs and area studies. With this anticipated hire, JSIS is continuing to build its capacities for training global studies students in the areas of cybersecurity, dis/misinformation and related emerging technologies that are reshaping global and regional relations. JSIS seeks to hire a full-time teaching faculty member who can train students in some of the following topics:
Major cybersecurity policy debates with a focus on general international cybersecurity issues and understanding of technical terminology and legal frameworks related to cybersecurity;
Comparative regional and areas studies cybersecurity or dis/misinformation insights on the role of states, corporations, civil society members and organizations, and international actors in structuring power, inequalities, and opportunities;
Global studies of disinformation and social media and place-based analysis of content monitoring, moderation, surveillance, censorship, and social credit systems in particular contexts;
Global studies of emerging technologies such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence that have created new arenas for state and regional competition and conflicts.
This position will be expected to engage in teaching and pedagogical innovation. University faculty participate in teaching, scholarship, and service. The criteria for merit evaluation and promotion for this position will give the greatest weight to teaching.
This is a 3-year, renewable, non-tenure track, full-time teaching appointment for a 9-month service period, with a competitive salary, university benefits, opportunities for promotion, and protection of academic freedom.
A PhD, or foreign equivalent in a relevant field, is required by the start of the appointment. The applicant should demonstrate knowledge and expertise in global security and have a proven track record of successful teaching in this field.
