Position Description Security Operations Manager, 7423SE Department of Public Safety – University Security Twin Cities Campus
Description of Position: The Security Operations Manager is a non-uniformed, non-sworn representative of the Department of Public Safety. Responsible for University Security’s day-to-day uniformed operations. This position is responsible for oversight, discipline, development, and safety of University Security’s uniformed employees. This includes Security Monitors, Security Advisors, Lead Security Advisors, and Security Supervisors.
This position reports to the Assistant Security Director of University Security within the University of Minnesota, Department of Public Safety (DPS).
This is an evening/overnight position.
Responsibilities / Essential Functions: 80% Operational Process Management and Oversight:
Develop, disseminate, and maintain written work instructions that clearly define performance expectations and operational procedures for uniformed employees
Develop, maintain, and implement effective processes for: Identifying and resolving employee performance problems in keeping with applicable laws, policies, and bargaining unit agreements; Ensuring timely, relevant, and appropriate communications to all uniformed employees including nightly rollcall, email bulletins, and special alerts; Tracking and reporting unit operational performance including service metrics; Ensure proper completion and storage of all unit operational documentation; Safety regulations and procedures to minimize risk of workplace injuries; Ensuring there are sufficient trained staff working at all times to meet service demands; Driving employee engagement and engagement with your team to develop and coach them in their duties and responsibilities
Conduct training, as needed, to include classroom, field training, and on-the-job training
Maintain organization and ensure completion of operational records such as payroll, vehicle logs, equipment logs, daily reports and incident reports
Performs other duties as assigned
20% Coordination and Collaboration:
Maintain regular contact with: Leadership from the Public Safety Emergency Communication Center (PSECC) and University of Minnesota Police Department (UMPD) Patrol Unit to share relevant operational information, coordinate unit procedures and activities, and prioritize deployment of security resources in furtherance of a safe and secure campus; Leadership from University Services HR to ensure that corrective action processes and practices are consistent with applicable laws, University policies, and bargaining unit agreements; The University Security Workforce Manager to ensure that the selection, training, and prior experience of uniformed employees is appropriate to support the unit’s operational effectiveness

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
Ability to manage conflict respectfully and constructively
Ability to work independently and with limited direction
Experience managing or supervising students or part-time employees
Required Qualifications:
BA/BS plus at least 4 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 8 years.
Availability and willingness to work evenings and weekends to oversee nightly operation
Able to pass a background check
Must meet and maintain requirements for access to law enforcement sensitive information including CJIS Data Access Terminals
Combination of related education and work experience to equal at least eight years in law enforcement, security-related field, or management-related field
Essential Qualification: Regular attendance is an essential qualification for this position.
