Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Advanced Light Source Division has an opening for a Cyber Security Systems Administrator to join the team.

The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. In this exciting role, you will be the primary technical resource working on the ALS Beamline Security Upgrade project. This is an important multi-year project to improve the computing infrastructure and cyber security of the ALS beamline networks. There are over 40 scientific beamlines in operation at the ALS. You will work closely with research scientists and systems administrators to assess the current state of beamline networks and develop a prototype security model which can be replicated to all beamlines. In addition, you will produce training materials and lead one-on-one and small group sessions to help research scientists adapt to the new security model.


What You Will Do:

• Work with research scientists to document the current state of beamline networks.
• In collaboration with systems administrators, network administrators and cyber security staff, develop a plan to enhance beamline network security.
• Implement hardware and software changes on beamline networks.
• Deploy tools for monitoring and managing beamline cyber security.
• Produce training materials and lead one-on-one and small group training sessions to help research scientists adapt to the new security model.
• Implement a system to regularly backup data and configuration information from critical beamline computers.
• Participate in weekly project status meetings.

What is Required:

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience, and a minimum of 5 years' experience working in a professional IT environment.
• Hands-on experience or formal training related to network security and/or cyber security best practices (e.g., operating system hardening, firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, antivirus).
• Advanced knowledge of cyber security concepts, tools, methods, and threats.
• Experience working with PC workstation and server hardware, networking, and security devices.
• Strong knowledge of PC operating systems, including Windows, Linux and macOS.
• Experience managing and troubleshooting Ethernet networks. Familiarity with basic network switching and routing concepts. Understanding of TCP/IP and related network protocols and services.
• Working knowledge of remote access hardware and protocols (e.g., VPN, SSH, VNC, RDP).
• Strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Excellent written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to clearly convey technical information through well-written and concise documentation.
• Willingness to promote and demonstrate effective cyber security practices.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience working in a scientific research or academic setting.
• CISSP, CISA, Security+ or other related certification.

• This is a full-time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

• This position is expected to pay $8,658.00 - $10,822.00/month, which fits within the full salary range of $8,658.00 - $14,610.00/month for the Systems Administrator. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
