The members of the Department of Public Safety endeavors to foster an atmosphere in which officers provide a prompt, professional presence to remain aware of and responsive to the diverse community in which they serve, while justly enforcing the rules and regulations of the University and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The Dispatch Center fields about 20,000 phone calls for assistance annually. Additionally, Communications personnel are responsible for coordinating supplementary external emergency response such as fire and emergency medical services. The Communications Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year regardless of semester breaks and holidays. The Security Officer Dispatcher is responsible for police, security, and maintenance dispatch duties in the Dispatch Center.
Responsibilities include:
Answer both emergency and non-emergency phone calls; transfer calls to the appropriate department
Provide information on university events, policies, and procedures
Monitor and direct radio traffic of police, security, maintenance, and EMS units
Operate the CLEAN/SCOPE terminal
Run vehicle and operator checks for Patrol Officers
Enter CIC transactions for criminal incidents
Monitor alarm systems and dispatch proper responders; monitor closed circuit camera system
Use appropriate problem-solving techniques with walk in emergency and non-emergency customers; provide a positive outlook to the department
Essential functions: These positions are deemed “essential” and must remain or report to work during partial or full day closings of the University due to hazardous road conditions, emergency circumstances or for other reasons.
Must be able to perform essential job functions and successfully complete an oral examination and background investigation.
Minimum Qualifications
GED or high school diploma required
A valid driver’s license is required
Clean criminal history
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to deal tactfully with general public
Excellent communication skills
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
Ability to work under varying climatic conditions
Ability to remain alert at all times and to act quickly and calmly in emergencies
