The SPHERE Project:
The Security and Privacy Heterogeneous Environment for Reproducible Experimentation (SPHERE) is a newly funded NSF mid-scale research infrastructure being built by USC Information Sciences Institute and Northeastern University. SPHERE will offer access to an unprecedented variety of hardware, all relevant to cybersecurity and privacy research, connected by user-configurable network substrate, and protected by a set of security policies uniquely aligned with cybersecurity and privacy research needs.
SPHERE has a dedicated staff of research engineers and operators. We are looking to hire a systems administrator IV to help us build this innovative cyberinfrastructure. This is a unique opportunity for someone to join our vibrant team and work on groundbreaking research in supporting scalable, large-scale virtualization on diverse hardware.
*This positions location is in Marina del Rey, CA. This role requires periods of on-site work to physically manage equipment. A hybrid schedule is feasible for additional tasks that can be performed remotely. Week-to-week requirements will be determined in accordance with project managers and technical leads.
Serves as a project leader for the customization and maintenance of a complex multi-platform system configuration.
Provides leadership, guidance and direction to lower level staff.
Provides analytical and technical expertise on system integration, installation, replacement and upgrades of servers and operating systems.
Recommends changes to improve systems and network configurations, and determines hardware or software requirements related to such changes.
Oversees, maintains and administers computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations.
Monitors systems, servers and auxiliary devices for performance and security. Determines whether adjustments need to be made and confers with technical support staff and vendors as appropriate. Identifies changes that need to be made in the future.
Leads troubleshooting, identifies hardware and software problems in a timely manner, resolves routine problems, replaces defective components and researches resources to identify solutions.
Coordinates data backups, disaster recovery operations, repairs and/or recovery of systems.
Designs, configures, and tests computer hardware, networking software and operating system software.
Assigns, modifies, and deletes user accounts and resolves security access problems; maintains integrity of the security system.
Develops and maintains appropriate system documentation. Formulates standards for system management.
Work with vendors to maintain appropriate level of support.
Stays informed of new developments and technologies by reading journals and other pertinent publications, maintaining contact with vendors, and participating in professional organizations, meetings and seminars.
Experience configuring open source network operating systems such as Cumulus Linux, SONiC, and/or dentOS
Experience with large scale automation technologies such as Ansible, Puppet, and/or Salt
Experience configuring and managing container-based microservice infrastructures through Kubernetes
Experience configuring and managing virtualization-based infrastructures, and with hypervisors such as Proxmox, VMWare, HyperV, and/or Qemu/KVM
Knowledge of Linux-based package managers (e.g., apt, dnf) and ability to team-developed open source code into packages for external distribution

The annual base salary range for this position is $124,689 to $138,000. Possesses the required knowledge to build, configure, load and restore a system from the ground up. Previous systems administration experience required.
