The IT Security Professional is the primary resource for specialized security standards and policies within the Division of Finance and Operations (F&O), Institutional Integrity and Risk Management (IIRM), and other groups supported by Finance and Operations Information Technology (FOIT).
This position implements preventative security measures to support end users and business units by identifying and addressing security issues through research and patching software vulnerabilities. Responsibilities include anticipating security breaches, recommending best practices for compliance with internal and external security policies, conducting risk analyses on software installations, reviewing software purchases, and implementing remediation measures. Enforce security guidelines independently to strengthen customer systems and collaborate with leadership on planning and risk assessment.
Additionally, the position serves as the security expert for FOIT s security review program, guiding other departments in compliance with security practices and university standards. Collaborate with leadership and the ITS Security Office on policy implementation, coordinate incident responses, and monitor security trends. Provide technical support as needed by prioritizing security service requests and ensure thorough documentation. Administer security guidance for FOIT-supported devices, including PCs, peripherals, and mobile devices, and resolve complex technical issues with expertise in networks, hardware, and software.
The IT Security Professional drives ongoing improvements for the department by monitoring key performance metrics, troubleshooting shared storage issues, ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive data, and developing policies and administrative procedures to enhance desktop support and customer service.
Education and Experience:
Intermediate to advanced experience supporting, configuring, and maintaining PC hardware and software in an enterprise environment (Windows 7/Windows 10, Active Directory, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, Office 365, printing setup/configuration/troubleshooting, working knowledge of file servers, print servers). Knowledge and experience with TCP/IP networking and troubleshooting. Knowledge of SQL reporting is also preferred.
Advanced experience planning, coordinating, and leading projects with varying complexities involving a diverse customer base. Intermediate to advanced experience configuring and supporting specialized business or point-of-sale hardware, building access control systems, mobile devices, and network-connected devices. Intermediate to advanced experience implementing processes on the network and workstations to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with information security policies.
Essential Skills:
Demonstrated experience with maintaining the confidentiality of highly sensitive information. This position supports departments in processing financial transactions, managing building access, storing employee training records, and delivering essential campus services. All security standards required by the department, the University, state law, and federal law must be observed. Errors in performance can lead to loss of personnel or financial data, improper access to critical systems, and/or disruptions in financial revenue.
Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to quickly learn and apply new hardware, software, and firmware behaviors, as well as troubleshooting methods for each type. Due to the sensitive nature of the equipment and information, strong coordination and focus are essential. The position may require extended concentration on a specific issue for hours at a time, or efficient and successful multitasking across several tasks.
Ability to exercise independent judgment, make decisions, complete assigned tasks without direct supervision, and manage multiple complex problems simultaneously. Ability to function as an integral part of a team in a deadline-driven, high-volume, and fast-paced environment. Proficiency in engaging and communicating with individuals across all levels of the organization while ensuring confidentiality at all times. Ability to securely manage and maintain records, demonstrating considerable judgment in assessing information and determining necessary follow-up actions. Proficiency in comprehending and executing complex verbal and written instructions, and in conveying ideas clearly and concisely in both written and verbal communication.
Ability to handle stressful or sensitive interactions with customers, vendors, and other personnel in a professional and courteous manner. Position involves frequent interaction with individuals at varying levels of skill and responsibility, requiring clear and professional communication with vendors and campus personnel on equipment installations and troubleshooting.
A valid North Carolina Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one prior to start date, is required. Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and legally for transportation throughout the Town of Chapel Hill. Maintenance and equipment support involves the safe use of hand tools, including screwdrivers, and pliers. Demonstrated ability to identify and avoid hazards that may lead to injury, whether physical, electrical, chemical, biological, or otherwise.
