Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist offers a two-year, PGY1/2 Investigational Drugs and Research residency program. The first year of the program is designed to provide a broad range of experiences in a progressive environment committed to an advanced level of pharmacy practice, patient care, and education. We strive to help our residents achieve their full potential as clinicians, educators, and individuals. Additionally, we support our residents through extensive mentorship.
The second year of the residency program is designed to provide residents with the specialized skills and knowledge required to become an effective leader and practitioner in the field of investigational drugs and research pharmacy. Residents will have experiential opportunities that incorporate both didactic and hands-on learning, precepting opportunities, as well as an opportunity to advance drug research knowledge through a research project. Residents will have the benefit of learning and interacting with Wake Forest Baptist’s impressive cadre of respected and well-known researchers and clinicians in oncology and non-oncology areas.

The PGY2 year consists of a combination of required and elective learning experiences. Residents are also evaluated longitudinally on projects, presentations, research, and practice experience (staffing). Our flexible design allows residents to tailor their experiences to meet their individual career goals. Required learning experiences include Orientation, Investigational Drug Services Operations, Phase 1 Oncology Clinical Trials, Infectious Diseases Clinical Research, Regulatory Compliance, and Clinical Decision Support. Elective learning experience offerings include (but are not limited to) Pharmacogenomics, Cancer Research and IDS, Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy, Basic Science and Animal Research, Medical Oncology, Ambulatory Oncology Clinical Trials, and Solid Organ Transplant.
Written and verbal communication skills are emphasized throughout the program. Presentation opportunities include disease state topic discussions, drug class presentations, pharmacy grand rounds presentations, case presentations, staff development presentations, development and presentation of a medication use evaluation, and a research poster presentation at a national meeting.
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is a rotation site for pharmacy students from Campbell, Wingate, and High Point Universities. Layered learning opportunities to precept PGY1 residents and P4 students are optimized whenever possible.
One position is available annually.
Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited school

In the ambulatory setting the Department of Pharmacy has community and specialty outpatient services as well as home infusion. Graduate Pharmacy Education consists of eleven residency programs, an internship program, and learning experiences for three schools of pharmacy in North Carolina.
