Founded in 1978, Mercy Ships is a faith-based, international development organization that provides free, life-changing medical procedures and capacity-building training by sending hospital ships to countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Our hospital ship, the Africa Mercy, is 16,572 gross registered tons, 152m long, and home to over 400 volunteers from over 50 different nations. The hospital onboard has 5 operating rooms, approximately 80 hospital beds, and in 2019 we performed our 100,000th procedure. In October 2020, we announced Mercy Ships will be adding a new hospital ship, the Global Mercy, to our fleet this year. The Global Mercy is 37,000 gross registered tons, 174m long, and the world’s largest civilian hospital ship that will be home to over 600 volunteers. The addition of the Global Mercy will more than double our surgical and training capacity, which also doubles our need for volunteers!
